If we were to take a walk around the city with our eyes wide open, actually making an effort to see what’s around us, we would realize two things. First, that there are many more people living on the street than just those we actually see. Right now, in Madrid alone, more than 700.
And secondly, in winter, these people get cold. Extremely cold.
Gimme Shelter is a project that arose from the desire to get people off the street and, while they are there, to help them stay warm and put them on a more equal footing with everyone else.
Gimme Shelter is a coat, but a coat that’s different from all others. Gimme Shelter is also a refuge. A hood. A pair of gloves. A backpack. Ten pockets. A pillow. A mattress and a sleeping bag.
The costume designer Matías Zanotti designed Gimme Shelter with the idea of creating a piece of clothing with enough features and functions to help people survive on the street; so that a person currently living in these conditions doesn’t suffer from the cold.
At the same time, we wanted to make a garment that fulfils a very different function: to appeal to someone who doesn’t live on the street, someone like you or me. Someone who, when choosing a coat, wants one that is not only warm, but also appealing to the eye.
Gimme Shelter has already begun to give shelter in Madrid. The idea is that you, too, can form part of the project and, before long, you can also have your own Gimme Shelter. This is because for every coat someone buys, we will make two: one for the person who bought it, and one for someone who right now lives on the street.
Gimme Shelter is a project from Acción Humanitatis, a non-profit organisation for development focused on aiding, guiding and working to help people who live on our streets today. With everyone’s help, we want to continue giving shelter in an effort to make us all more equal.
